Australian Immigration

To emigrate to Australia from the UK or another country under the migration program a person must be a skilled migrant or sponsored by a family member ("Family Stream") who is an Australian citizen or permanent resident. 97,500 places were reserved for skilled immigrants in 2005-06 to help meet labour shortages. Over 40,000 places were allocated to family reunion immigration visas.

Since the 60's British Invasion of bands led by the Beatles, British music has punched above its weight on the world stage. 70's Brit Rock supergroups like Led Zeppelin were followed by a wave of British Punk and Glam Rock bands and MTV image bands such as Duran Duran. Brit pop emerged from the Indie scene in the early 90's 'Cool Britannia' period. Today the British Rock heritage continues through bands like Coldplay, while the British have pioneered multiple genres of electronic music such as Techno and Trance.

Why we created POM fm

We're POMs in paradise but we miss a few things. Some of us were £10 POM migrants, others migrated more recently. Britain is frozen in time on the day we left. We want to celebrate our British heritage and the quirky traits that make up the British character. We miss the British sense of humour: British comedy and comedians, British jokes and TV shows that only the British could create and comprehend. TV comedy that is world class. Classic comedy skits that still make us laugh.

We miss the betting shop, a flutter on the Saturday UK National Lottery, a walk to the pub. Locally we may be POMs, pommy bastards, limeys or Brits. While we're British expats part of us will always be upover.

Where are the British Clubs?

While most folks spend their lives close to their birthplace, the British are an exception. British expats are found all over the world, but sometimes they have cunningly assimilated. You'll rarely find British migrants at the 'English Club'. British expats are not seen as an ethnic group, save postings to exotic British expat locations such as Singapore, Hong Kong or Thailand, where we are often grouped with Americans and other Europeans.

You'll find Italian clubs all over Australia, but despite the huge British migrant populations Australia and New Zealand wide, you will not find a successful British Expat Club in Perth, Melbourne, Sydney, Darwin, Hobart, Auckland, Adelaide, Wellington or Christchurch.
